WomanCare Centers, PLC started CenteringPregnancy® in January of 2016 when we received our first grant awarded to us through the March of Dimes in partnership with the Anthem Foundation. Since then we have received a total of three grants to help us grow this model of care and reduce disparities in healthcare!
CenteringPregnancy® combines your prenatal health assessment (weight, blood pressure, etc), education and support in a group setting of pregnant women with similar due dates. Women, and their support people, meet over the course of 9 sessions, each geared towards a different topic where we incorporate in guest speakers from the community who volunteer their time to come and speak. Women who participate in the CenteringPregnancy® appreciate that they can be active participants in their own care, get to know other pregnant women, and feel better prepared to make decisions about their pregnancy and births.
This model of care is evidence based to decrease rates of preterm birth and increase patient care satisfaction and increase breastfeeding rates. Norfolk, Virginia has been designated by the March of Dimes as one of the 100 US cities with the greatest number of births and they experience 11% preterm birth rates compared to Virginia's state average of 9.2%.
All of our providers are trained to participate in CenteringPregnancy®. We have, on average, one group per month that take place various days and times of the week. Be sure to give us a call or ask one of our providers about the program so we can get you started!
